Do cats feel stress ? Can stress make cats sick ?

Probably most of cat owners keep their cats indoors all the time these days. It’s safe and reduces chance to get into dangerous situations such as cat fights and car accidents. However, indoor cats tend to lack exercise and mental stimulation which might give them some stress. Stress can be the cause of illness for cats as well as us.
In this post, I’ll tell you two of illnesses that cats develop because of stress !

Feline Idiopathic Cystitis

Feline idiopathic cystitis ( FIC ) is an inflammation of the bladder that causes lower urinary tract disease. Feline idiopathic cystitis is a little different to regular cystitis. Because FIC is not due to bacterial infection, bacteria and/or calculi are not detected.

The common symptoms of Feline Idiopathic Cystitis are :

  • Difficulty urination
  • Urinating outside of the litter box
  • Licking the urinary opening continuously
  • Dark color ( bloody ) urine

If your cat has diagnosed as FIC, you may need to give some medical treatment, but most important thing is relieving stress from your cat. Rethink the surroundings if the cat litter is clean, if you changed anything recently . . .

To prevent stress, it’s important to check your cat regularly and carefully, so you can notice any strange behavior of your kitty quickly.

Excessive grooming

Cats love to keep clean themselves and grooming is a normal behavior of cats. However, sometimes cats start grooming too much because of stress . . . licking, biting and chewing till they lose hair and wound the skin.

If your cat has been licking himself / herself too much because of stress, it’s necessary to identify the cause of stress to stop it. Observe your cat behavior and check the living conditions if you change anything such as diet and cat litter. Then, create comfortable surroundings. Don’t scold them. It’s just giving them more stress. Take some time ( at least 30 minutes a day) and play with them by him/her favorite toy !

Create stress-free environment and give a happy Life !

You may think cats are easygoing and live at their own pace, but they also are sensitive and cautious. Your cat might be stressed in many different reasons.

Spend lot’s of time with your feline friend and understand his or her personality, and then make a stress-free and comfortable surroundings to keep them happy !
